Family Support Services
For the year 2005-2006

PARENT RESOURCE CENTER. The center is run by par­ents/guardians for parents/guardians. Core services of the center include information dissemination, referrals, resources, parent/student advocacy, family health, and wellness information, translations for bilingual parents, BART Youth Discount ticket sales, free AC Transit bus passes for qualifying students, and workshops on topics related to life at BHS and beyond. COLLEGE/CAREER CENTER The focal point of college and career planning, this center is where students receive advice about college and careers, learn about college resources, get help with applications and essays, meet college representatives and explore information about scholar­ships and financial aid. The center also provides information on many careers and has resources to help students write resumes and prepare for job interviews. COUNSELING CENTER helps students with their course pathways to college or career, and with academic, personal and social problems that might interfere with their ability to achieve their academic potential. Counselors serve as case managers for the students in their caseloads, coordinating services for all students. First floor of the D (administration) building. BHS E-TREE The BHS e-tree provides a wealth of daily information about the school, including the Daily Bulletin and other school news, volun­teer opportunities and notices. BHS PTSA holds monthly information meetings for the Berkeley High community. The BHS PTSA Newsletter is mailed home approximately every six weeks during the school year and it is packed with long-term kathy_hatsky@berkeley.k12.ca.us

School Psychologist The school psychologist and interns serve as consultants to staff, parents, and students to support students with behavior and adjustment difficulties. They assess student eligibility for special education services. Will Bove, 644-6602. G104C.

PARENTS OF CHILDREN OF AFRICAN DESCENT PCAD is a non profit advocacy group supporting BUSD students. As concerned parents, grandparents, and guardians of children of African descent, PCAD is working to collectively focus its support, attention, intent and expertise on one goal: to ensure that all students at all grade levels throughout the BUSD achieve academic success by giving them opportunities to learn, thrive and discover their way to success. DISABILITY RIGHTS EDUCATION AND DEFENSE FUND Every year, thousands of parents struggle to get appropriate school services for their children with disabilities. DREDF helps families sort out which disability laws apply to their children and advises them about how they can receive the help they are entitled to. Contact 644-2555 or 800-348-4232. BERKELEY THERAPY INSTITUTE BTI has been licensed as a non-profit Community Clinic since 1972, with clinics sites in Berkeley and in Concord Their licensed clinical staff includes sixteen psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and marriage, family and child counselors. Services are offered on a sliding scale basis. Contact BTI in Berkeley at 841-8484.

BERKELEY PARENTS NETWORK The Berkeley Parents Network is an electronic parent-to-parent advice newsletter organized for families in the Berkeley area. This volunteer network includes not only a bi-weekly online newsletter but also a Berkeley Parents Network website where newsletter advice and recommendations are archived.
