CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE)

Berkeley High School will be administering the CAHSEE one more time this school year. The last administration of the year will be a make-up on March 21 and 22 for all tenth-, eleventh-, and twelfth-graders who have either not taken or who have not passed the CAHSEE. Rory Bled is the vice-principal in charge of the make-up exams, and she will be sending letters home in February to students who need to take the exam.

All students must meet the CAHSEE requirement as well as other state and local requirements to receive a high school diploma. The primary purpose of the CAHSEE, mandated by state law, is to ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate grade level competency in the state's academic content standards for reading, writing, and mathematics.

The CAHSEE is divided into two parts: (1) English-language arts, which includes reading and writing and (2) mathematics. All questions on the examination are aligned to California academic content standards, adopted by the State Board of Education. Academic content standards describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level from kindergarten through grade twelve. Students who have not passed one part of the exam must only take that part.

There are three period 7 classes for students who have not yet passed the CAHSEE: two are for English Language Learners and one is for other seniors who must pass the CAHSEE. Counselors have assigned all students on track to graduate who must take the test, to the appropriate class. If you have any questions about your child's status, please contact his/her counselor. Most seniors in the Special Education Department will receive a waiver if they have taken the test at least once this year using the accommodations or modifications in their Individualized Learning Plan and had Special Education status as of July 1, 2005. Kathy Hatzke (644-6889) can provide you with specific information about your child if he/she is in Special Education.
Individual student results will be received by our school district ten weeks after the exam is given and will be sent to your home as soon as they are available. In the meantime, please call Rory Bled at 644-4566 if you would like additional information.
