ABSENCE ALERTS NOW COMING BY EMAIL
In early February, Berkeley High expanded its absence notification system to include email. In addition to making the automatic telephone calls alerting parents of a student's unexcused absence, the Attendance Office now sends email notices, which repeat the information made on the phone call. These emails do not come directly from Berkeley High, but via email@notification.com. The email addresses were obtained from the Emergency Cards, which students turned in at the beginning of the year. If your email address has changed or was not included on the card, you may notify Janet Huseby, BHS Volunteer Coordinator, at jhuseby@pacbell.net and she will make the necessary changes.
Effective immediately, students will have five days to clear their absences, beginning with the day that they return to school. Previously students had just three days, and we're hoping that the additional two days will give them the time that they need to make sure that their absences get excused. You may call the Attendance Office at 644-6209 any time to leave a message excusing your child. You may also email Charles Keefe (Charles_Keefe@berkeley.k12.ca.us) to excuse your child's absence, or you may give a written excuse to your child, and he/she can present it to the Attendance Office before school, at lunch, or after school. An excuse generates a Clearance Slip that students must then collect and show to their teachers.
If you find that your child was marked absent by mistake, please contact his/her teacher, who can then correct the error. Teachers have more than five days to make the correction, but it is good to let them know right away. As a reminder, three tardies equal one unexcused absence, and five unexcused absences in a quarter will result in a lowered grade. Thank you for supporting us in making sure that Berkeley High students are in their classes on time everyday.
