BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL CHOICES: 2006 – 2007

In February, the Berkeley School Board approved the Berkeley International High School as a program within the Comprehensive School. As a result, members of the class of 2010 (incoming 9th graders) will be the first to enter a Berkeley High School with wall-to-wall programs and small schools.

Incoming students will have the option of choosing from six academic programs. They include four small schools – the Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA!), Community Partnerships Academy (CPA), Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS) and School of Social Justice and the Environment (SSJE) and two smaller learning communities within the Comprehensive High School – Academic Choice (AC) and Berkeley International High School (BIHS).

Students enrolled in small schools will take at least four of their classes within the small school. The rest of their classes are in the Comprehensive High School. Students enrolled in one of the smaller learning communities — Academic Choice or Berkeley International High School — take either two or three classes within that smaller learning community and the rest in the Comprehensive High School. The Comprehensive High School departments include: African American studies, Arts: Visual and Performing, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Technology, and World Languages. When registering for classes, students will rank and submit their preferences after considering each option relative to their own interests and needs. A lottery held at the end of the spring semester following diversity guidelines set by the Berkeley Unified School District, will determine school or smaller learning communities with the Comprehensive High School assignment. Each academic program is designed to give students the content knowledge, skills, and diverse learning experience to be successfully prepared for a 4-year university or college.

Below is contact information for the six programs. Listed first is the Administrator followed by the Lead Teacher.
